Grandfather Mountain, Nature on a Whole Different Level

Greene Construction Looks Forward To Warmer Temperatures

Top Shop Jan. 25

The months of December, January and February brought some of the worst winter weather that the High Country has ever seen. During those three months, 81.1 inches of snow was recorded at the top of Grandfather Mountain. The staff of Grandfather was not able to make it to the top to record weather for 30 days this winter, so it is predicted that the "official" snow total of 81 inches is three to five feet short of the actual amount. Ice, wind and bitterly cold temperatures also added to the harsh winter.

"I think we were able to access the top of the Mountain eight days in January and only a few more than that in February," said Skip Greene of Greene Construction. "This has greatly hampered the progress, but there has been progress."

During the winter weather, the systems already in place in the new Shop worked as designed, which in itself is a tribute to all involved.

bathrooomWork has progressed on the interior throughout the winter. The sheet rock installation is almost complete and the ceiling grid is being installed. The final "hook up" of the electrical, phone and security systems is taking place and all of these systems will be tested before the ceiling tile is installed.

There has been a lot of finish work within the staircase and other exposed concrete areas. The tile work in the bathrooms has been completed and the plumbing fixtures and partitions are being installed.

elevator"We are on schedule to bring most systems online within the next 30 days," said Greene. The elevator is now ready for final adjustments, trim, and state inspection. The heating and ventilation system has been operational for several months and only lacks final adjustments, insulation and thermostats. Light fixtures are also being installed.

As the temperatures begin to moderate, some exterior work will take place. There is still some construction fencing and equipment to remove, as well as some railings and columns to paint.
