TEN DAILY HIGH TEMERPATURE RECORDS BROKEN AT GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN IN AUGUST

With ten new daily high temperature records established over the past month, 2007 was the warmest August ever in the 51 years of record-keeping at the official US Weather Service reporting station located next to Grandfather Mountain’s Mile High Swinging Bridge. The average mean temperature of 69.7 degrees topped what had been the warmest average mean temperature for August of 65.24 degrees set in 1980.

The average high temperature of 75.9 degrees was a whopping 9.72 degrees hotter than usual for August, and the average low temperature of 63.5 degrees was 7.5 degrees above normal for this time of year.

A total of ten daily high temperature records were broken during the month of August at Grandfather.

  • August 7: 79 degrees      Previous: 77 degrees in 1980
  • August 8: 80 degrees      Previous: 79 degrees in 1979
  • August 9: 81 degrees      Previous: 79 degrees in 1979
  • August 10: 79 degrees     Previous: 78 degrees in 1980
  • August 11: 78 degrees     Previous: 77 degrees in 1992
  • August 15: 79 degrees     Previous: 78 degrees in 1995 and tied in 2005
  • August 16: 81 degrees     Previous: 79 degrees in 1988
  • August 24: 80 degrees     Previous: 76 degrees in 1975
  • August 25: 79 degrees     Previous: 76 degrees in 1975
  • August 29: 76 degrees     Previous: 75 degrees in 1993

The all time highest temperature ever recorded on the Mountain was 83 degrees set August 22, 1983 and again on July 26, 2005.

Like much of the southeast part of the nation, Grandfather Mountain was extremely dry during August, receiving the majority of the little rain that fell at the end of the month. Up until the 28th it was the dryest August ever, but with one and half inches of rain falling in the last four days of the month 2007 ended up only the 6th dryest August on record.

The rainfall total of 1.96 inches for the past month was 3.76 inches, or 65 percent, below the 51-year average rainfall total for August of 5.72 inches.

The rainfall total for the year-to-date comes to 31.18 inches, which is 12.23 inches (or 28 percent) below the 51-year norm for this time of year.

The highest wind speed for the month was 43 mph on August 16.
