RECORD BREAKING RAIN DURING MAY AT GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN

GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN, NC – One year ago Grandfather Mountain had just finished up its seventh driest May ever. This year, a rainfall total of 13.59 inches, recorded at the official US Weather Service reporting station located next to Grandfather Mountain’s Mile High Swinging Bridge, makes this May the wettest ever. This month’s total smashed the previous record of 9.76 inches set in 1976.

The record for the number of days with precipitation during the month was also broken. Rain was measured 25 days this month, breaking the previous record of 24 days in 1986.

The rainfall total of 13.59 inches for the past month was 8.07 inches, or 68 percent, above the 53-year average rainfall total for May of 5.52 inches. Rain for the year-to-date totals 32.11 inches, which is 6.64 inches (or 26 percent) above the 53-year normal for this time of year.

The average high temperature of 60.32 degrees was 0.41 degrees colder than normal for May, and the average low temperature of 46.71 degrees was 1.33 degrees above normal for this time of year.

Wind gusts over 60 mph were recorded once in May.
