Heller's Blazing Star
(Liatris helleri)

Heller's Blazing Star is an endangered dwarf liatris that grows in shallow, humus or clay loam soils on rock outcrops, ledges, cliffs and balds at high elevations. They generally grow in full sun in areas that drain quickly after intermittent drenchings of rain.

Stiff, erect stems bear many 1/2-3/4 inch broad flower heads in a dense spike, blooming in July and August.

Of the eight sites on the globe where Heller's Blazing Star is currently known to survive, all are in Northwest North Carolina and the largest is on Grandfather Mountain.
