(Diphylleia cymosa)

Rhizomatous perennials found on rich seepage slopes only in the southern Appalachians bloom in May and June. The white flowers are 1 inch broad and are followed by blue fruits a little more than 1/4 inch in diameter.

A single large, umbrella-like leaf, 1-2 feet across rises on a non-flowering stem. Two somewhat smaller leaves appear on the flowering stems.
