45th Annual Girl Scout Day

All Girl Scouts and troop leaders are admitted free with proof of membership. Discount admission for other family members. Staff naturalists provide free nature programs throughout the day.

Mildred with Girl Scout

Grandfather Mountain adopted the Girl Scouts in 1971, inviting the girls to visit the mountain each September to learn more about nature and the Blue Ridge mountains. The Scouts returned the gesture by adopting Grandfather’s late mascot, Mildred the Bear, as an honorary Girl Scout and presenting her with a series of pins to mark her many years with the organization.

Plan to join us Sept. 19, 2015!

2015 Schedule

9 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Check-in table at the Nature Museum to register your troop and work on an insect challenge. Your troop’s submission will be entered for a prize drawing at the end of the day!

9 to 9:45 a.m: Buzzy Bees
Come and learn about the wonders of pollination through this fun and active game. Meet at the Let-It-Rain Picnic Area.

10:30 to 11 a.m. and 11:05 to 11:35 a.m.: A Bug’s World
Be prepared to get up close and personal with some of our smallest lifeforms on Grandfather Mountain. In this program, Grandfather’s education staff and participants look through leaf litter and search for insects. Guests get the opportunity to collect the bugs inside a small container to get a closer look and try to identify them. This is offered twice if we have a lot of participants, since it’s a hands-on program. Meet at the Let-It-Rain Picnic Shelter.

10:30 to 11:15 a.m.: Beekeeping 101
Learn what it takes to maintain a hive of honey bees from a local beekeeper. See the tools and observe the challenges in caring for bees, while learning about the importance of these pollinators. Meet at the Butterfly Garden.

11 a.m. to noon: Girl Scout Service Project
Contribute your troop’s service to Grandfather Mountain’s Butterfly Garden. Please call (828) 733-4326 to register your troop for this project. Limited space available.

1 p.m.: Guided Hike on the Bridge Trail
Join us for a walk to search for insects along the way! Meet at the lower Bridge Trail trailhead by the Black Rock Parking Area. Please call (828) 733-4236 to register. Limited space available.

1 to 2 p.m.: Butterfly Blitz in the Butterfly Garden
Drop by to attempt to capture and identify butterfly species in our Butterfly Garden! We’ll search for other species of insects, too. Meet at the Butterfly Garden.

2:15 to 3:15 p.m.: ARTamorphosis
Girl Scouts will create their own butterflies, and, using field guides, they will see how close their imaginations are to the real thing. Capping off the program, the girls will get their hands painted like their personal butterflies and transfer them to a large canvas. The result will be a kaleidoscope of butterflies for all at Grandfather Mountain to see. Meet at the Let-It-Rain Picnic Shelter.

4 p.m.: Closing Ceremony
Join your fellow scouts for a short closing ceremony at the Butterfly Garden.

  • I was amazed with the scenery and the way the mountains just made my mouth drop in awe and wonder.  I have began hiking as a hobby lately after having a major back surgery in January 2010.  Now after coming there I have a new goal to hike up MacRae Peak so we will be coming back in a few months  and hopefully bring more people with us.  We really enjoyed the natural habitat and the bears. You people really know how to entertain us. The staff was very very and a special thanks to Jill on top of the Mountain at the Swinging Bridge for explaining the points and mountains to us.  She is to be my tour guide when I come back !
