Oct. 24 – It is a beautiful day on Grandfather Mountain.  There will be an abundance of color below 3,000 feet as you drive to Grandfather Mountain, and once here you will be have a superior vantage point for photographing color in the valleys.  Today’s photograph by Helen Moss Davis shows the peaks of Grandfather in the distance from Lost Cove.

The best route for color continues to be the Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville to Virginia – but the trees with the most color will be below 3,000 feet.

Other colorful routes are:

  • US 221 from Marion to Linville Falls
  • US 321 from Hickory to Blowing Rock and Boone to Elizabethton, TN
  • US 421 from North Wilkesboro to Boone and Boone to Mountain City, TN
  • NC 181 from Morganton to Jonas Ridge
  • US 19E from Elizabethton, TN to Elk Park.

Tips for visiting Grandfather Mountain during peak fall color season.

  • My wife and I along with our daughter, son in law and grand daughter recently visited the mountains and one of the highlights was our trip the Grandfather Mt. The reason it was great was because everything is handicap accessible.  My wife is wheelchair bound and we were able to include her in everything even the bridge. She was so happy because she was able to tell everyone the story of the first time she ever walked across the bridge and how it was made of wood. The animal park was the best and the highlight for our grand daughter. We were on vacation for a week and the trip to Grandfather was the last day and we truly saved the best for last. Thank you for all you do to make this State Treasure open to all.
