IRS Approves Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation for Non-Profit Status

stewardship foundation logo The IRS has approved Grandfather Mountain's application for not-for-profit status, marking a critical juncture in the plan to assure the long-term protection of Grandfather Mountain. Over the next month, administrators will be working feverishly so that on November 1st the operations of the 57-year-old tourist attraction can officially be transferred into the care of the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation. Swinging Bridge Undergoes Routine Maintenance

bridge amintenanceThe extreme weather conditions that confront Grandfather Mountain's Mile High Swinging Bridge make regular maintenance of the suspension span a must. This September crews from Taylor and Murphy Construction Company of Asheville, NC, were on site to tweak the cables, guy wires and springs that secure the Bridge in place, confirming that all is properly adjusted and that the structure is in good repair. Top Shop Construction Update

top shopDays and days of rain and fog made the construction site atop Grandfather Mountain a dreary place to be in September, but work progressed none the less. They have almost finished facing the exterior with stone and stucco, precast concrete trim has been welded to the building's steel frame, windows are going in, and the power has been turned on. Peak Beauty of Autumn Foliage

Colors will be bright on the upper slopes from the 5th to the 10th. Color at Grandfather will peak between the 10th and 20th. At the end of the month, Grandfather becomes a great vantage point for looking down at color in the valleys. Click here for insider's tips on visiting in October.

The Colors of Grandfather!

Grandfather's naturalists lead a guided hike to discuss the reasons trees change color in the fall and to identify what trees turn what colors. 1:00 p.m. at the Woods Walk. Free with park admission.
