Thousands Support The Blue Ridge Parkway By Investing In Specialty Licence Plates

In the two years since the Blue Ridge Parkway special background tag was issued by the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles, the plate has become the most popular specialty tag ever offered by North Carolina.

There are now over 17,600 active plates yielding $20 per plate per year in revenues for the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation. The tags, which have room for four characters, passed 9999 long ago and moved on to one letter with three digits. The most recent plate issued was J327.

The goal is to reach 50,000 subscribers which will generate $1 million per year for preserving the Parkway ethos. The Foundation is currently negotiating with the DMV to expand the program by developing a tag for motorcycles.

Revenues generated by specialty tag purchases support a variety of projects that enhance the visitors’ experience, including funding interpretive programming and capital improvements.

The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, the private supporting foundation for the Blue Ridge Parkway, is authorized to request and receive funds on behalf of the parkway under a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service and the U.S. Department of the Interior.

“We depend on the Foundation to provide for that margin of excellence,” said Parkway Superintendent Phil Francis. “We are indeed thankful for the public’s investment in the tag program and the Foundation.”
