Destratifing Fan Improves Energy Efficiency In Nature Museum

Two destratification fans have been installed in Grandfather’s Nature Museum in the Mountain’s ongoing quest to reduce its carbon footprint.

The fans, meant to combat air stratification, were placed high up in the Museum’s cathedral ceilings. Air stratification occurs when heat rises in a building or dwelling, leaving the cooler air at ground level. Air stratification is the single biggest waste of heating energy in buildings and homes today.

The fans move the warm air down for a more even floor to ceiling temperature. This reduces energy use and cost, eliminates hot and cold spots, and will increase visitors’ personal comfort while in the building.

According to Airius, the fan manufacturer, DeStratification is a primary step in energy conservation recommended by the Department of Energy.

A year’s usage of each destratification fan translates to approximately 8,300 miles in carbon dioxide savings. With the energy saved from the two fans combined, those 16,600 miles of savings is equivalent to driving from Wilmington, NC, to San Francisco and back two and a half times.
