rockslideRock Slide Below Split Rock Closes Road In Mid-March

A rockslide occurred during the late hours of March 17. Large slabs of rock slid down from the hillside and covered the main road just below the Split Rock and the Sphinx Rock. Explosives were needed to break up the boulders so that they could be cleared from the roadway. Read more about it.

Top Shop Update

The sun finally came out in March, melting the snow that had kept construction workers from ascending the hill to work on the Top Shop. The change in the weather is bringing changes to the interior of the shop as painters and plumbers hurry to get the building ready to hand over the keys. Plans are still on track for the facility to open by Memorial Day. Read more about it.

Pink-shell Azalea in Bloom

The world's largest natural population of the pink-shell azalea is found on the slopes of Grandfather Mountain, covering the peaks in pink clouds from mid to late May.

Joins us for two days filled with guided hikes and presentations on Grandfather's birds, wildflowers and nature. Included with park admission.
