Winner Chosen in the "Name the Electronic Newsletter" Contest

Billie Coleman of Roanoke, Virginia, won the contest to name Grandfather Mountain’s e-newsletter. Of the 103 different names suggested for the electronic newsletter, judges felt that by starting with the cyber-symbol “E,” Ms. Coleman’s entry of “Escape to Grandfather Mountain” captured the essence of what Grandfather’s e-newsletter is all about.

“I am amazed and speechless,” said Ms. Coleman. “Your newsletter photos bring much needed escape. My husband Mike, my children Matthew(13) and Emily(11) and I all have life-long family memories of your beautiful place. Remembering Grandfather Mountain brings light and beauty into the now.”

In all, 71 people sent in suggestions that referenced everything from a family patriarch to a place with lofty heights. Some of the suggested names like “Paw Prints” and “Paw Paw News” played off of the word “paw” being both a nickname for a grandfather and a body part of a bear. Others related to Grandfather Mountain’s animal mascots with phrases such as the “Bear Facts” and “Bear Tracks.”

Some names centered around body parts like “Grampa’s Knee” or the “Mountain Ear,” while others alluded to the idea of a grandfather having the power of speech with suggestions like “Grandfather’s Whisper,” “Grandfather’s Sayings” or “Grandfather’s Tales.” Many suggestions incorporated the word “view” because its definitions embrace the meaning of vistas and of opinions. Still others like the “Grandfather Mountain Profiler” played with idea that the word “profile” not only means a face, but also means a summary.

“In the end, Billie Coleman’s E-scape was the most cutting edge of all the entries,” said Marketing Director Catherine Morton. “It is very encouraging to realize that so many people are interested in the newsletter they get from Grandfather Mountain, and it is great fun to see how creative our readers can be.”

As winner of the “name the newsletter” contest, Ms. Coleman and her family will be treated to a behind the scenes tour of Grandfather Mountain the next time they are in the area.
