Winter Hummer

Naturalist Jesse Pope shared this picture of our first winter hummingbird of the season resting on a feeder at the Grandfather Mountain Nature Museum on Saturday October 20.

"I caught a glimpse of him yesterday afternoon," said Pope. "This morning I was lucky enough to capture a picture of this beautiful juvenile male bird. It's either a Rufous or an Allen's Hummingbird, but we probably won't know for sure until someone can capture it and band it. I spoke with Dwayne Martin this morning, and
he may be able to come up on Tuesday if the bird is still hanging around. Feel free to come up and check him out if you get a chance!" (Jesse Pope photo)
