Orographic Glory
Winter has arrived at Grandfather Mountain and Friday, November 17 was the kind of chilly day when the clouds freeze on the trees. This phtoograph captures a good example of an orographic cloud (a cloud whose form is changed by the airflow over a mountain), and the photographer was very pleased with the prismatic qualities of the cloud at the moment he snapped the photo. There were not a lot of people on Grandfather to enjoy the beautiful scenery, but those who were enjoyed a real treat! (Jim Morton photo)
