Grandfather Journal

Charlotte Skyline

I was taking sunrise photographs on top of Grandfather Mountain February 17. I paused and wondered just how many times Hugh Morton had stood in the very same spot taking pictures in sub-zero temperatures before most people even open their eyes to see the day.

Just minutes later, Charlotte appeared in the southern skyline, as Mr. Morton had seen and captured on film many times before. It was as clear and brilliant as I had ever seen it. As quickly as it appeared, it disappeared into the clouds.

I dedicate this picture in memory of Hugh Morton, his great photography, and everything he did for the state of North Carolina. Monday, February 19 would have been his 86th birthday. (Jesse Pope photo)
