Pop Goes the Saw Whet!

Saw Whet Owl

Grandfather Mountain staff members got a fun surprise while on the Black Rock Trail on Wednesday, March 7. The group was out checking squirrel boxes in hopes of finding the Northern flying squirrel, an endangered species in North Carolina.

No squirrels were found on this trail but another creature decided to make good use of the homes! A small Saw-whet owl popped its head out to get a good view of the group who was visiting it.

“It was the neatest thing,” said Head Trail Ranger Steve Miller, “the owl just stuck his head out and looked around at all of us.”

The Northern Saw-whet owl is also on the state’s endangered species list. (Jesse Pope photo)
