The vast majority of our events are included with your park admission fee, but some events which require a small fee to participate to ensure you receive expert guidance and knowledge from specially trained individuals. Check the right column of the Event Calendar to confirm whether any additional fees apply.

Behind the Scenes Habitat Tour

Habitat keepers lead guests on an hour-and-a-half tour behind the scenes of the Animal Habitats. See where the animals sleep at night, meet black bears not commonly on display, watch a training session and ask questions about why the animals call Grandfather Mountain home. Guided Walk
  • Naturalist Programs

Accompany a staff naturalist on a short walk (less than 1 mile, round-trip) to enjoy the scenery and understand the stories behind the Grandfather Mountain landscape. Guided walks last approximately 45 minutes and start at the lower access to the Bridge Trail, across from the Black Rock Parking Area. During the Remarkable Rhododendron Ramble (June 1-14) and Colors of Grandfather (Oct. 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18), these events take the place of the Guided Walk. The walk may be cancelled due to adverse weather.

Grandfather Mountain naturalists will share information about the bald eagles and answer questions while you view the birds up close during this encounter. Because eagles prefer to eat in seclusion and don’t interact with toys, they do not receive a daily enrichment like the other habitat animals. This animal encounter may be cancelled due to adverse weather.

  • I loved it. It was for a school trip. We went through the bridge and I could feel it swinging. It was amazing up there. I never seen anything like it. I hope I come back!! It was SUPER cold! That didn't stop the beauty of it though!! Thanks for the great time!
