Umbrella Leaf

umbrella leafUmbrella Leaf
(Diphylleia cymosa)

Rhizomatous perennials found on rich seepage slopes only in the southern Appalachians bloom in May and June. The white flowers are 1 inch broad and are followed by blue fruits a little more than 1/4 inch in diameter.

A single large, umbrella-like leaf, 1-2 feet across rises on a non-flowering stem. Two somewhat smaller leaves appear on the flowering stems.

  • My husband, myself and our 6 year old daughter went to Grandfather Mountain, and we hiked up the mountain instead of driving. We had a blast. It is so beautiful there, we are planning to go back. I recommend it to everyone.
