Umbrella Leaf

umbrella leafUmbrella Leaf
(Diphylleia cymosa)

Rhizomatous perennials found on rich seepage slopes only in the southern Appalachians bloom in May and June. The white flowers are 1 inch broad and are followed by blue fruits a little more than 1/4 inch in diameter.

A single large, umbrella-like leaf, 1-2 feet across rises on a non-flowering stem. Two somewhat smaller leaves appear on the flowering stems.

  • This visit to Grandfather Mountain was clearly worth the drive up to see the beautiful views and the animals in the habitats.  We ate at the restaurant and went to the nature museum also which was nice.  Really enjoyed the drive up.
