Sunset from Cliffside Overlook

Oct. 7 –  Blue skies and fall color!  It is so exciting here right now!  The peak color for Grandfather’s high elevations (above 4,000 feet) will be this weekend and next, Oct. 8-16.   Beyond that, there will still be plenty of good color to drive through in the High Country and on your way up to Grandfather.

Tips for visiting Grandfather Mountain during peak fall color season.

Today’s photograph by Helen Moss Davis was taken last night from Grandfather’s Cliffside Overlook.  The bright red huckleberry bushes turn early because they are growing in only a few inches of soil on top of the rocks.  You can also see a lot of huckleberry bushes on the cliffs above the Blue Ridge Parkway near the Viaduct.

The best route for color right now is the Blue Ridge Parkway from the Grandfather Mountain exit at milepost 305 north to Blowing Rock.  That section will take you across the Parkway viaduct.

Other colorful routes are NC 105 from Seven Devils to Linville, NC 184 from Tynecastle to Banner Elk and Beech Mountain Parkway to the top of Beech Mountain.

  • I picked up my 6 year old son from school  and asked him if he could guess where I was gonna take him to spend the weekend. With eyes big and wide he asked, Grandfather Mt? I have never seen him get so happy. Or should I say, pumped up to the max. He thanked me over and over again, while packing for the night in the wild. As with most things in life can be, this was a gift that did not fade away or break like most  presents after minutes of play.  As we got closer  to the top he expressed his deepest thanks, I saw my boy grow up this weekend. I pushed him and he pushed me and together we made it all the way from 105 to the Swinging Bridge.  "Get Out More.  Make memories, not regrets."
